According to a recent study conducted by Farmers Insurance Group, we rank at number 18. The study looked at the different factors that make a city safe: crime, foreclosures, weather, air quality, life expectancy and job loss stats. We ranked just below Seattle and just above Denver.

What does this mean? Can I now unlock my doors at night? Probably not but it does confirm what I have always believed about our city. This is a great place to live all around! I feel safe going downtown to a restaurant with friends. Of course I don’t stay out that late and don’t frequent the downtown nightclubs that seem to have weekly incidents involving police. The places that I go, day or night seem to be safe and well lit.

The key here is to look at all of the factors that made up this safety study. Our air quality is excellent. We get the best water in the whole world cold and tasty right out of the tap. As for life expectancy, my grandfather was a Colorado Springs native (b.1900) and he lived to be nearly 99! Our clean living and penchant for fitness makes it easy to live a long time here.

The large military presence in this city gives financial stability to the region. Job losses are less than other cities due to our guaranteed military payroll every two weeks. We never boomed as much as other cities during the past ten years so our job losses have been much less than other areas similar to Colorado Springs.

Housing areas can be safe in most area of the city. Even in lower price ranges, a good safe home can be found. It all depends on who is assisting you in your search. I am a lifetime native of Colorado Springs. I know the areas that are most popular with buyers based on typical needs such as safety, convenience, schools etc. If you are considering a move to the area, feel free to contact me. I would love to assist you!

Many people who are searching for a home in Colorado Springs are concerend about the safety of one area or another. In the olden days (hmmm…maybe 5 years ago) you would have to drive to the police station and ask for a crime report. I don’t think many people ever did that–too much hassle. I have found several great ways to research the crime stats from the comfort of your own computer screen.

The first site is called Spot Crime. It features a city map overlaid with little crime icons. A bit cartoony given the seriousness but a good way to detail the types of crime in an area. The site uses little icons like a fist for an assualt crime, a set of handcuffs to show an arrest, etc. Cute and gets the point across. The user can search by address or by date. This site is a good way to see at a glance what is happening in certain areas.

The Colorado Springs Police site has several mapping options on its web site. It lists weekly stats of various crimes on several different maps, all shown in a .pdf format. I think this site is a bit clearer to the user than the other site I mentioned above. Users may also search for Meth Lab busts, as well as local Sex Offender lists.

Having all of this data can make it much easier to decide which neighborhood to choose. If the maps are studied even briefly, it’s pretty clear what the safer parts of the city are. The downside to these options is that they only include the city of Colorado Springs. Communities such as Fountain and Monument are not large enough to have the data to publish like Colorado Springs does. Watch this site for new developments in those areas as I find them.

If you would like to know more about Neighborhoods in Colorado Springs, leave a comment below or contact me.
