Peterson Air Force Base Housing Goes Private
Thinking of living on base when you PCS to Peterson Air Force Base? Better think again–it could be a long wait! I have spoken with the people at Terra Vista Communities , the private company managing all housing at Peterson. They tell me that there is always a waiting list for housing.
The wait can be short or it can be long, depending on the rank and situation of each service member looking for housing. It seems that nothing has changed since I made my PCS move back to Colorado Springs in 1989 with my Active Duty spouse and son. We were on the waiting list at that time and it was 3 years long! Good thing that we went ahead and bought our first home then! My husband resigned from Active Duty before we ever got to the top of the list.
Living on base does have it perks but times are changing. Many home management companies now offer landscape maintenance. In my time living on base (yes, back in the dark ages) we had to totally maintain our lawns. Not really a big deal though since the lots are not too large. Utility allowances are now given and any overage has to be paid by the home occupant.
All of this sounds just like renting to me! In fact, you now have to sign a lease to live on base. Why not just buy a home instead! Colorado Springs homes are very affordable and have easy access to all military facilities. If you want to rent your home out when you PCS to your next duty station, there is a steady stream of potential renters who are moving here all the time. Your home can continue to be a great investment for you until you decide to return to the area or sell it in the future.
Certain duty stations are better for living on base than others. Colorado Springs is a perfect place for Air Force members to buy a home! For more info on how you can buy a home in Colorado Springs, contact me or leave a comment. I would love to assist you!
